The summer is upon us, even though the rain lashing Newcastle today would make you think we are in November! Fabulous late addition to NN2017

Newcastle Noir is thrilled to announce that Victoria Watson will be joining the late night Saturday panel 'Presenting the Case', alongside Katen Sullivan, Sarah Ward, Quentin Bates and Susan Heads.


Victoria Watson is a Creative Writing tutor, blogger and the organiser of the Newcastle leg of Noir at the Bar. Victoria has won awards for  both her fiction and non-fiction work. Her debut novel 'Fix Me Up'  remains a work in progress. Her blog - elementaryvwatson.wordpress.com - features book reviews, guest posts and the very popular annual reviews.

Fringe Events - Crime with a Northern Edge

Whet your crime-fiction loving appetite for the main event! We’ve assembled a group of fabulous local authors to talk about their novels, how the region inspires their writing and all things crime fiction.

  • Sheila Quigley


Sheila Quigley, North east born and bred, life- long dog lover, is the bestselling author of the Seahills series and the Holy Island trilogy. Recently voted as Number 7 by the public in WH Smith's poll of best writers of all time she also has written two short films on bullying and self harming. Two of her books Run For Home and Bad Moon Rising have been made into successful stage plays.



  • Michael K Foster


Michael K Foster has been writing crime thriller novels since 2006, all of them based in and around the North East of England. His debut, The Wharf Butcher, was released in 2015 and offers a unique insight into this rugged landscape. Its sequel, Satan’s Beckoning, also features the hard-hitting DCI Jack Mason and local criminal profiler David Carlisle. The third book in the series, Angelica’s Curse, is scheduled for release in November 2017. Michael was born in Plymouth, England. After ten years’ service in the British Army, he moved up to Newcastle where he gained his Master’s Degree. A former Magistrate, he is married with two children and lives near Durham.



  • Matt Hilton

Matt Hilton quit his career as a police officer to pursue his love of writing tight, cinematic American-style thrillers. He is the author of the high-octane Joe Hunter thriller series, including The Devil's Anvil – Joe Hunter 10 - published in June 2015 by Hodder and Stoughton and Blood Tracks, the first in a new series from Severn House publishers in November 2015. His first book, Dead Men’s Dust, was shortlisted for the International Thriller Writers’ Debut Book of 2009 Award, and was a Sunday Times’ bestseller, also being named as a ‘thriller of the year 2009’ by The Daily Telegraph. 

Dead Men’s Dust was also a top ten Kindle bestseller in 2013 and 2016. The Joe Hunter series is widely published by Hodder and Stoughton in UK territories, and by William Morrow and Company (Harper Collins) and Down and Out Books in the USA, and have been translated into German, Italian, Romanian and Bulgarian. As well as the Joe Hunter series, Matt has been published in a number of anthologies and collections, and has published novels in the supernatural/horror genre, namely Preternatural, Dominion, Darkest Hour and The Shadows Call. He has recently published the next Joe Hunter novel, No Safe Place, in May 2016, and his next Tess Grey novel, Painted Skins, in August 2016. The third Tess and Po book – Raw Wounds – is due to be published in July 2017.

Our photographer

Have you ever wondered who took the gorgeous pictures you can see in our "Gallery"? And who will be there in less than three weeks to document this year's festival? We would like to introduce our photographer, Donna-Lisa Healy!


Donna-Lisa has been involved with Newcastle Noir from its inception as photographer in residence at the Lit and Phil. For her the opportunity to capture the crime writer in the frame is a privilege and also affords the audience greater insight into the festival line-up.

Donna-Lisa works at other literary festivals and cultural events and is hoping to stage an exhibition celebrating international female crime authors to coincide with the centennial celebrations of women’s suffrage in 2018
